Education and Innovation
My name is Josiane Uwumukiza, and I am proud to be a graduate of Gashora Girls Academy, Class of 2022. Growing up in Rwanda’s northern province with six siblings and loving parents, I developed a deep love for creative pursuits and education. Today, I am a junior at Wellesley College, near Boston, studying Computer Science with a minor in Biochemistry. The journey from Gashora to Wellesley College has been transformative, shaping both my academic path and who I am as a person.
My childhood dream was to study biochemistry and become a tissue engineer. But after my first semester, I found I didn’t like working in a wet lab and felt something was missing. I was yearning for a sense of creation and innovation. That’s when I decided to take a Computer Science course. The joy I felt while designing programs reminded me of my time at Gashora, where I was the head designer for the Kaza fashion club. Back then, I loved turning creative ideas into tangible designs. Computer Science gave me that same feeling of fulfillment—bringing ideas to life. It was a pivotal moment that set me on my current path.
Queen Mary University
In fall 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad at Queen Mary University of London. Those three months were full of academic growth, cultural exploration, and personal discovery. Immersing myself in a new culture was eye-opening; I learned to appreciate British society—from their norms and slang to their food. I took an International Relations class focused on Africa’s role in global affairs, which gave me new insights into how different parts of the world discuss Africa. One of the most memorable experiences was meeting a retired Computer Science professor in a coffee shop. What started as a casual bet over milk cake turned into a deep conversation about the evolving tech landscape. Moments like these reminded me to stay open to learning from unexpected people and places.
Because of Gashora
Gashora Girls Academy was instrumental in preparing me and I consider one oft he best experiences of my life. The school’s emphasis on Whole Girl education encouraged me to explore various interests, from academics to leadership roles. As deputy head girl, I learned to manage responsibilities, communicate confidently, and lead with integrity—skills that continue to serve me. The advanced curriculum allowed me to place out of college courses, giving me time to explore diverse subjects.
At Wellesley, I’ve taken courses across more than ten departments, but my passion for technology and entrepreneurship has solidified my focus. Working on projects in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision has been thrilling, and I’m excited that I will be joining Microsoft as an intern in summer 2025. These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the foundation Gashora provided, including self-discipline and time management which made my transition to college much smoother.
The supportive environment of Gashora extended beyond the classroom. Teachers play a pivotal role in all of our person growth. Gashora’s teachers played a crucial role in shaping my confidence and ambition. When I doubted myself, they encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, helping me realize my potential. Programs like advisories fostered open-mindedness and critical thinking, qualities that continue to shape how I see and interact with the world.
Looking Ahead
Five years from now, I see myself at the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship, running or contributing to a tech startup that addresses critical challenges in my community and beyond. I want to use my expertise in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence to develop innovative solutions in areas like education, healthcare, and sustainable development. Beyond my professional goals, I’m passionate about inspiring young women in STEM, especially in underrepresented communities like my own in Rwanda. Through mentorship programs, workshops, and collaborative projects, I hope to show that technology can be a powerful tool for change and creativity.
Gashora Girls Academy gave me the confidence to dream big and the tools to turn those dreams into reality. As I continue my journey, I carry its values with me, striving to make a meaningful impact on my community and the world.
